Week 4 - Printmaking 2

Reflection
Today we learn printmaking again. Today's lesson was quite interesting and experimental, we try 3 different print methods, using iron, solvent(thinner) and adhesive medium (White Glue). I tried to interchange the methods with the different kind of materials because different combination will give different kind of results either is it faded, solid printed or nothing. What I am quite surprised and liked is the packaging tape, I find it very interesting that when we wet the under side of the paper and tried to remove the white paper, yet the design and did not get remove instead only the white people. I felt that packaging tape is something every household will have yet I did not get to realized that I am able to do something like this. The packaging tape acts like a lamination to the design and helps to protect it. It can be stick to your sketchbook or any experimental book that you will have. Always must sand paper before making the paper wet, because sanding down the paper a little will help to remove the white paper faster and using something of a large surface to rub out will also help to get it removed faster. After trying all 3 methods, I would rate the packaging tape as first followed by, marker pen followed by adhesive medium then iron as iron is the hardest medium to get the ink to transfer.

Below are some of the images and results after trying out the 3 medium.
Done using the "marker". Using the marker is quite hassle free because it is able to very quickly transfer the print onto the wood after applying about 2 coats then use a spoon or any other materials to press against the paper.
Tried using the 'marker' on this risograph print to see whether what kind of result will i achieve. Not esay to transfer the print. Maybe it just does not work with risograph ink.
Done using the packaging tape. Quite fun using the packaging tape to get the print out just by using water and rubbing it.
Through this, I realised that paper has 2 layers or 3 layers including the print.
Couple more attempts
Done using thinner. Not that easy to get the ink transferred as well. Mainly only the shapes of the flower and not the details. I did tried rubbing on the details area but it still does not transfer.
Done using iron and it's the hardest and worst medium to get the ink transferred unless you are experienced.
Tried to iron for couiple of minutes but it only able to get a faded kind of look on the wood.
For this attempt, it seems to work for the end area whereby the details were nicely transferred while the rest of the area only got a faded kind of look.

Research

I chose to do a cafe called Habitat located in Singapore. Based on their current logo, I will not steer too far away from it current look and feel rather I will just re-arranged it's logo layout. Went on to Pinterest to get some inspirations for the kind of layout I want to do and feel as well.
This is their website @  http://www.habitatcoffee.com.sg/index.html
These are the several layouts I explored at. The top half of the above image is mainly trying to find a suitable font to suit the look and feel. While the bottom half of the image are the exploration of the layouts and the supporting elements within the logo. The chosen logo is the one with a number one placed at the top left-hand corner.
Once the layout is confirmed, I used inkjet printer to print the mirrored layout. I am using the adhesive medium - mod podge for this signage.
First timer on this medium so i am unsure how much should i apply onto the wood. I am guessing the areas where the design will sit i will just apply more of it just to play safe.
Ruler used to push away the air bubbles. Left dry for about 20 hours before rubbing it with water.
I believe showing a video would be much easier than typing so here's to my first process video.
In the video I have used
2 small towels - Used to rub and damp the paper because i do not want to pour directly but i still do it in the end.
Sandpaper - To sand away paper which can't be removed using water.
Brush - To keep my work area clean by brushing away the scrap paper
Water - Works as a medium to get rid of the paper
This is the end result continuing from the video. I am unsure why do i have the glue marks on the wood which i can't seem to get rid of it.
